Jurong Lake area's 9-year makeover complete

The introduction of a new children’s playground and a nature-themed roof pavilion at J Link, an up-to-date pedestrian mall, are specifically well utilised by households and for conducting community events, commented Mr Tan.
“There are a number of tuition centres in this zone, so after their sessions, kids often go down to play and dash about with their friends while the parents do some retail therapy nearby. It creates an extremely lively environment,” noted Mr Tan in Mandarin. He possesses 3 retail spaces in Jurong that he leases out.
The Housing Development Board (HDB) announced yesterday that the rejuvenation plans for the Jurong Lake district under the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme is completed. It was chosen back in 2011 for renewal, along with the Hougang area and East Coast.
Over the years, the residential estate has been gradually fitted with new amenities like communal spaces and interweaved gardens.
One of the core ideas under the ROH was the rejuvenation of the Jurong East Town Centre, which includes Blocks from 130 to 135 Jurong Gateway Road. Currently renamed as J Connect, its common spaces and building facade were overhauled and provided a new modern look with flourishing landscapes.
This J Connect links to the nearby JCube shopping center via this J Link.
Under the ROH programme, ten neighbourhood centers inside the housing estate have also been revitalised. This gives residents of Dairy Farm Residences more options to spend time in the weekends.
For example, Bukit Batok West Shopping Centre has now a communal garden with more than twenty breed of herbs, and a common pavilion with rooftop greenery. It is home to 65 retail shops, many eateries, a supermarket and a wet market.
The land around Jurong East MRT station, which has become known as Jurong Gateway, has also turned into a bustling town, with mixed-use commercial developments like JEM and Westgate, and an integrated healthcare hub made up of Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital.
A new 15 kilometer Jurong Lake area cycling track will be linked to the new cycling paths of Taman Jurong estate, that are expected to be ready by 2020. With this new track, even cyclist from Clavon condo can easily reach Jurong and the west side of Singapore with ease.
From 2021 onwards, the rest of the sections of Jurong Lake Gardens, including the Japanese and Chinese gardens, will also be ready. The western part of the gardens was opened to the public in April 2019.
By 2026, the Jurong Lake district will turn into a leisure and recreational cluster, complete with a brand new 7 hectare integrated tourism hub and a new look for the Science Centre.
These will be form part of the up-and-coming Jurong Lake District spanning 360 hectares, branding it as the biggest mixed-use business zone outside the CBD. Residents from Dairy Farm Residences can soon go to work in this locality.
The district has been designated to be a car-lite zone.
New MRT lines will also be built, like the Jurong Region Line by 2027, and the Cross Island Line by the 2030s.
Mr Tan is assured that the revitalization plans will bring in even more visitors to the region, which has been christened as the “Orchard Road of the West”.
“When all the neighbourhoods, malls and parks are networked together, residents won’t need to travel to other places to dine, shop or play.”
“We can do everything here in Jurong,” he commented.
