Singapore Ranked Most Liveable City For Asian Expats For 15th Year

For the 15th year running, Singapore has been ranked number 1 as the most liveable city for expatriates compared to other Asian markets. This bodes well for real estate prices locally, like that of Dairy Farm Residences in the latest survey compiled, the nation’s excellent amenities and infrastructure, large expat community leading to a wide social network, and low crime rate, contributed to its success.

“The city state will most probably continue to maintain its top rank in the considerable future,” said regional director for Asia at ECA International, Mr Lee Quane. ECA International produces these ranking results.

Brisbane of Australia maintained its second position, while Osaka, Sydney, Nagoya and Tokyo tied for third place.

Hong Kong’s position crashed 52 positions to rank 93 because of it ongoing socio-political tensions and months of pro-democracy protests in the city.

“Not only are the increasing political tensions a concern for expatriates staying in this region, the large protests that have taken place on a regular basis since June 2019 have had a negative impact on the everyday life of residents, which are mostly taken for granted,” commented Mr Quane in a statement last Tuesday.

“This includes the increase in crime rates and disruptions to Hong Kong’s transportation system since the protests began.”

The yearly ratings evaluate about 490 locations globally on factors such as personal safety, availability of health services, housing and utilities, climate and access to leisure facilities and a social network.

These results are aimed to help corporations determine realistic allowances for employees attending to international assignments.

All Vietnamese and Thai cities saw significant jumps to their rankings this year.

Vietnam has been improving its living standards for both expatriates and its citizens via investing in better infrastructure, said Mr Quane.

Thailand’s recent peaceful democratic elections shows that cities in the country have experienced an improved political environment – a factor that inevitably improves livability standards for expatriates, he noted.

Copenhagen is the most livable location for Asian expats outside the Asia-Pacific region, ranking ninth overall.
